‘Nigeria will be prosperous, despite challenges’

Ibadan - Mr Seyi Makinde, a former
governorship candidate of the defunct Social
Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, has said
that there is still hope of a prosperous Nigeria,
despite the current economic challenges.
Makinde made the statement on Wednesday at
the 3rd Seyi Makinde Ramadan Lecture held at
the premises of Nigeria Television Authority
(NTA), Ibadan on Wednesday.
He said that with prayers and absolute
commitment of the people to its progress, the
nation was sure of light at the end of the tunnel.
Makinde, who declined to make political comments,
said that anyone who did not belong to his political
camp belonged to no camp.
``I give thanks to God for witnessing another
Ramadan. It is only by God’s grace that one is
alive.
``I enjoined the people to keep faith with God
because He is the merciful and benevolent in
trying times,’’ he said.
Makinde enjoined Muslims to use the Ramadan
period to seek forgiveness from God and repent
wholeheartedly from their sinful deeds.
Alfa Atanda Bada, a guest lecturer, urged
Muslims to have faith in God and take good care
of their parents.
In his lecture entitled:``What is Faith and the
Benefit of Being Faithful?’’ Bada said that the
people should use the opportunity of Ramadan to
rekindle their faith in God.
``Our people should redirect their ways to God.
They should seek forgiveness of their sinful deeds
and uphold righteousness,’’ he said.
The lecture was attended by Sheikh Abdul-Ganiy
Abubakre, the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Chief
Lekan Balogun, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland,
Chief Lekan Alabi, Agbaakin of Ibadanland and
Alhaji Kola Balogun.

Mother chains daughter for refusing to attend school

This woman chained her daughter to a street lamp post for playing truant from school. The eight-year-old child was tied with a metal chain around her ankle and tied to a large metal post. The young girl was left there by her raging mother. Good Samaritans heard the girl crying in the car park outside the family's apartment on Wednesday afternoon. They tried freeing her but the thick chain was strongly secured with two padlocks - leaving the girl stuck for over an hour before arrival of the police. She told cops that her mum had punished her because she failed to attend mandarin classes at school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Benin residents instructed not to cook with fire on Sunday

Oba of Benin The Benin Traditional Council has instructed residents not to cook with fire on Sunday, June 5, as part of activities for continuation of the 15 days funeral rites for late Monarch, Oba Erediauwa. The instruction is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Mr Frank Irabor, made available on Friday in Benin. Irabor stated that Sunday would be the day of Edenagberen- Mwiwu in the royal funeral rites programme and as such, there would be no cooking with fire, in accordance with Benin customs and tradition. He then called on Benin indigenes and non-indigenes in the kingdom to observe the Igberimwin rite.
