Boko Haram suicide bomber kills 11 in Cameroon

A suicide bombing by a Boko Haram jihadist has killed 11 people in northern Cameroon, a provincial governor said Thursday, warning civilians not to breach special security measures aimed at preventing such attacks. It was the latest in a spate of raids blamed on the Nigeria-based Islamist militant group in the area, which have driven tens of thousands of people from their homes. A security source said the attacker blew himself up in the town of Djakana near the Nigerian border overnight. "Seven people were killed immediately, including the bomber," the source said, adding that most of the victims were members of a local vigilante group tasked with hunting down Boko Haram fighters. "They were gathered in a video room when the attacker entered and triggered his explosives," the security source said. Ibadan - Mr Seyi Makinde, a former governorship candidate of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, has said that there is still hope of a prosperous Nigeria, despite the current economic challenges. Makinde made the statement on Wednesday at the 3rd Seyi Makinde Ramadan Lecture held at the premises of Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Ibadan on Wednesday. He said that with prayers and absolute commitment of the people to its progress, the nation was sure of light at the end of the tunnel. Makinde, who declined to make political comments, said that anyone who did not belong to his political camp belonged to no camp. ``I give thanks to God for witnessing another Ramadan. EFCC Arrest Former NNPC GMD, Andrew Yakubu and oil magnate, Jide Omokore

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested former Group Managing Director of NNPC, Andrew Yakubu and rearrested oil magnate, Jide Omokore, today June 20th. EFCC sources say both men will be arraigned before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on a four-count charge of money laundering and corruption today. Yakubu became GMD of NNPC in 2012 after his appointment was approved by former President Goodluck Jonathan and was sacked Jonathan in 2014. Jide Omokore is a close associate of the former President and former Petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Forgery case against Saraki, Ekweremadu, a coup –Senate

The Senate on Sunday described the forgery case initiated by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, against principal officers of the Senate as a coup against the legislature. It claimed the move was aimed at subjecting the National Assembly to the control of the executive. The upper chamber also accused the executive arm and some unnamed party leaders of instituting the case to ensure that Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, were remanded in prison and prevented from presiding over the affairs of the Senate. The Senate, in a statement by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, described the forgery case as unconstitutional and a violation of the principles of separation of powers, checks and balances. A 12-year-old girl sexually abused by two men

The men identified as 52-year-old Emmanuel Nwachukwu and 22-year-old Chinedu Andrew, denied raping her but admitted to having sex with her. The duo maintained that the young girl had given herself to them willingly, and that she had lied about her age. 52-year-old Nwachukwu who is HIV positive, said he did not know his status before having sex with the victim. Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Emmanuel Orker-Jev, APC-Benue, made the allegation, weekend, while briefing newsmen in Abuja on the legislative activities of the 8th House in its one year anniversary. But he also stated that the House recorded an improved executive compliance to resolutions in its first legislative year, unlike the past when public officers demonstrated poor compliance to implementation of resolutions by securing restraining orders from courts. He pointed out that in the past, some resolutions passed by the legislature were ignored by serving ministers or members of the executive arm of government.
