Troops kill 10 Boko Haram fighters, capture 2 in Borno

The Nigerian Army on Saturday confirmed
the killing of 10 suspected Boko Haram
fighters after a clearance operation in
Gamboru-Ngala, Borno.
Col. Sani Usman, the Acting Director of
Army Public Relations, said this in a
statement in Maiduguri.
Usman said that two other suspects were
captured alive by the troops during the
operation.
He said based on information received that
the terrorists earlier dislodged at
Chukungudu and Hausari villages were
migrating towards Muska village in Gamboru
Ngala Local Government Area, troops of 3
Battalion, 22 Task Force Brigade, conducted
operations in the area.
``During the encounter, the troops killed 10
Boko Haram terrorists, captured two alive
and rescued a woman with her baby held
hostage by the terrorists,'' Usman said.
He said that the troops also recovered arms
and ammunition during the exercise.
The army spokesman said items recovered
included six AK-47 rifle magazines and 56
rounds of 7.62m (special) rounds of
ammunition.
Also recovered were one bundle of
detonating cord, a manual on how to
prepare Improvised Explosive Devices
(IEDs) , two rifle magazine pouches, a
Techno IPad, a Nokia cell phone and one
Gionee cell phone.
Others included one Digital Multimetre, six
SIM cards, three memory cards and one
Airtel Modem containing memory card.
He said that the captured suspects were
undergoing interrogation by the military.
``The captured terrorists are undergoing
preliminary interrogation while the rescued
woman and her child are receiving
necessary attention pending onward
movement to Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs) camp.
``Similarly, another element of the battalion
also conducted another fighting patrol to
Wumbi village based on received information
on the presence of remnants of Boko Haram
terrorists in the area.
`` The patrol team recovered 157 rounds of
7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 37 rounds
of 7.62mm (special) ammunition,’’ he said.
Usman also said the troops were facilitating
humanitarian assistance by supporting both
government institutions and NGOs working
with IDPs.
He also said troops provide security for
officials of the International Committee of
the Red Cross.

Mother chains daughter for refusing to attend school

This woman chained her daughter to a street lamp post for playing truant from school. The eight-year-old child was tied with a metal chain around her ankle and tied to a large metal post. The young girl was left there by her raging mother. Good Samaritans heard the girl crying in the car park outside the family's apartment on Wednesday afternoon. They tried freeing her but the thick chain was strongly secured with two padlocks - leaving the girl stuck for over an hour before arrival of the police. She told cops that her mum had punished her because she failed to attend mandarin classes at school in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Benin residents instructed not to cook with fire on Sunday

Oba of Benin The Benin Traditional Council has instructed residents not to cook with fire on Sunday, June 5, as part of activities for continuation of the 15 days funeral rites for late Monarch, Oba Erediauwa. The instruction is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Mr Frank Irabor, made available on Friday in Benin. Irabor stated that Sunday would be the day of Edenagberen- Mwiwu in the royal funeral rites programme and as such, there would be no cooking with fire, in accordance with Benin customs and tradition. He then called on Benin indigenes and non-indigenes in the kingdom to observe the Igberimwin rite.
