Nigeria Premier League defender Izu Joseph has been shot dead in his hometown of Okaki in oil-rich southern Bayelsa state, it was reported on Monday. The player's father said Joseph was killed accidentally by troops battling Niger delta militants on Sunday. Initial reports said Joseph was killed at a restricted area by soldiers on a raid, with his identity as a footballer only established after he had been shot. The powerful central defender joined Shooting Stars from Bayelsa United when the Ibadan club were still in the second-tier Nigeria National League. ABUJA —The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, court has imposed a fine of $3.3 million on Nigeria over the extra-judicial killing of eight citizens in the Apo District of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. The regional court ordered the country to pay compensatory damages of $200,000 to each of the family of the deceased killed and $150,000 to each of the injured by a combined team of soldiers and operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, during a raid of an uncompleted building at Apo Area of Abuja. The eight Nigerians killed when the security personnel opened fire on them were later found to be commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders who were taking refuge in the uncompleted building as a result of skyrocketing cost of house rent in the capital city. The Campaign for Good Governance (CCG) has urged the Presidency, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and all Nigerians, to be concerned about the current state of affairs in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of its larger implications on the polity as the future of Nigeria’s democracy is tied to the stability of the party. The group warned in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Grace Ochinokwu in Abuja on Tuesday that the PDP must not be allowed to disintegrate because this would lead the APC to become the behemoth that the PDP once was in the absence of a strong opposition.
