– Doctors were sure that Alana Long will die
in the womb or immediately after birth
– But her mom decided to give her daughter
a chance to survive
– The girl was born with her brain growing
outside the skull
Alana Long, now 11 months old, was born
with a a rare birth defect called
encephalocele that causes parts of her brain
grow outside the skull. The girl doesn’t cry,
cannot express herself and most likely
doesn’t feel pain.
Alana Long, 11 months was born with a huge
purple growth the size of her own head due
to a rare birth defect
Actually, the girl was not supposed to
survive a day, the doctors expected her to
die in her mother’s womb or immediately
after birth. But her mother refused to give
up and Alana was born weighing a healthy
3kg 900g in Accrington, Lancashire, England,
UK.
Her mother Catherine Long, 38, said: “If you
look at her now she is like any normal little
girl. We found at about the encephalocele at
20 weeks and it was upsetting at first. And
then we looked it up and looked at the facts
and decided to continue with the pregnancy
because we were told she would either die in
utero or at birth. We decided to give her a
chance to live a normal life but we do think
that Alana will be severely disabled. She is still
going strong and laughing though.”
